Financial aid and dropping class (10pts)?

February 22nd, 2012

i’m a community college freshman. last year i dropped a math class because i couldnt learn from the teacher (he didnt want to teach, he wanted to be P.Diddy and make us earn it by kissing his butt and i couldnt see the results from any of the work i was doing.)
so i was told about a possible "financial aid probation" and constantly warned that "financial aid isnt playing about people dropping courses. they want to know people are serious about their educations." i’m very serious about mine.
i love the subject sociology, but my instructor is a new teacher and its his first year.
i have generalized anxiety disorder which caused me to get nervous one the second day of class.
well, long story short, this instructor saw my anxiety and he began harrassing me. he lectures about me every class from start to finish, keeps telling me he has a wife, keeps saying "some people have issues and i’m happy i dont know what they are". he’s laughing at me, staring at me and constantly frowning at me.

i could ignore this but he wont let it go.. he’s obsessing over my anxiety that one day when i havent had any since.

i havent talked to him yet. but he doesnt take me seriously and he’s picking on me in various ways he believes he can get away with.

my mind is on my work. his mind is on making a show out of the fact that he thinks i have a problem.
to be honest, i came to college to naturally get rid of my anxiety troubles by making myself participate and to get an education. our minds aren’t in the same places.

anyway, school began on january 18. the last day to drop this class was the 25th.
what if he wont listen when i talk to him or he gets worse? how can i handle this? what will financial aid do if i drop another class?

From personal experience, I have dropped a class on the VERY last day, and my financial aid did not get affected (luckily my professor did not give me a WU (withdraw unofficially) cause I never went to his class since I wanted to drop it). I ended up with a W for a grade (withdraw). The last day for you to drop your class so that it doesn’t appear on your transcript is on the 25th, the actual last day for you to drop the class is sometime in April.

I also have had two friends drop classes (they dropped 2 each, in the middle of the semester). They both got their next financial aid check severely reduced. My girlfriend has also dropped a class, she was forced to make it up in summer school.

Talk to him first, asap, and privately – office hours or an appointment. Tell him, directly and briefly, that you feel he is targeting you in his class, and it is unfair, and it is not appropriate. See how he responds. If he does not respond well, go to the dean of the Sociology department, talk to him. But hopefully, the issue will end with your conversation with the professor, or his being spoken to by his Dean.

Do you have a formal diagnosis of anxiety? If so, then PLEASE go speak to the school’s office of disability services. Tell them what’s going on with this professor. They should be able to help you. This guy is basically picking on you due to your disability, which the university would be QUITE interested in knowing.
