Does anyone know infomation about the Pell Grant?
February 22nd, 2012
I was on their website and couldn’t really find the answers I was looking for and was wondering if anyone had a similar experience. I am an undergraduate student and received a Pell Grant. Can the school refuse to pay me my government awarded money for any reason? It would seem unfair if the school was receiving the money and refusing to apply it to my tuition, which looks like it is happening. Anyone have a similar situation happen?
you might be one of the students who got caught in the recent budget cuts
household making between $23,000 & $40,000 lost all or part of their pell grant awards
even though the feds said they would give it to your school, they have reversed course & changed criteria for aid
one of the complaints was there there was no warning for schools or students… students who were currently in-progress and above the new income limit (dropped down from $30,000 family for full pell grant) got cut-off as of January 2012
I would suggest your get with your Fin Aid office & see what the reason is…
If it happens to be that you were hit by the budget cuts, the Fin Aid office should let you know
but, they can’t apply money that they don’t receive
I think you’re misunderstanding something — being as while you may have been given pre-approval to receive the Pell Grant, your school is merely acting as a conduit relative to distributing the funds.
AND, if you have done something – as in not met the requirements to receive financial aid, like not keeping your GPA above 2.0 and/or Failing/Withdrawing from too many classes – then your school is not allowed by law to distribute any Pell Grant funds to you.
OTHERWISE, if you’ve only recently applied for the Pell Grant, well, the formal approval process takes up to a few months.
Either way, it appears you need to schedule an appointment with the financial aid office at your school — and they should be able to certifiably answer your questions as to what you’ve done wrong.
