February 22nd, 2012

I’m 21 and need a good job.. Any ideas?.. And how would I go about getting a job.. It seems these days u have to know somebody to get a job.. But what is there I can apply for with no experience , I’ve only worked at a grocery store for the last 4 years.. Any suggestions?

Use the grocery store job to move up inside the store or look for other jobs where sales and customer service (components of a grocery store job) are an asset and apply for them. In the interview show how much the grocery store helped you decide to get ahead in life. Always stress the positive in interviews and turn your weaknesses into plusses, for example your weakness can be "I won’t leave work until everything is done" which is a personal weakness (cant go home) turned into a plus for company (wanting to finish work)

You could also work in UPS or FedEx, those jobs really don’t require expience as most people end up quitting. Don’t quit those jobs and you will have good benefits

If your supervisor at the grocery store thinks you are doing a good job, you can ask him/her how you can work your way up the ladder in the particular grocery store organization. You may be encouraged to take some marketing or other business related courses at the local community college. If you are lucky, your employer may even offer a tuition reimbursement plan for employees who take certain courses. Ask someone in the store Human Resources office, too.

Here’s the deal, in this day and age, most decent paying jobs require some post-high school instruction/training/degree. That includes truck driving, plumbing, lock smithing, auto mechanics, psychology, teaching, nursing, food sales/marketing, etc.

Of course, the US military is always looking for good candidates. People enlisting in a branch of the US military learn discipline and good skills to apply to future careers. Some enlisted military personnel qualify for officer candidate school. After their period of enlistment, many can be eligible for funding toward higher education through the GI Bill.

First you need to decide where your interests lie regarding what you want to do with your life career-wise.

Even though you have been out of high school for a few years, I recommend that if you live in the area where you graduated from HS, you telephone the school and ask to make an appointment with one of the guidance counselors there. He/she can start you on the path to make "a plan" on what your goals are and how to achieve them following the best educational path for you.

Probably there is a career advising service offered by your local community college. You will need to telephone the school and ask about that, if you don’t want to go the HS counselor route.

Do consider the kind of work/job that will not be exported out of the USA – work where clients/customers need to come to you (health care, barbering, auto mechanics, teaching, etc.) or where you will be asked to come to the customer (plumbing, interior decorating, landscaping, etc.)

Example: I have a young cousin who is now a plumber’s assistant. He agrees it may not be glamorous work, but he earns a good living and he says all his customers are happy to see him. :-)

Best wishes
