Shingles: An acute infection caused by the herpes zoster virus, the same virus as causes chickenpox. Shingles is most common after the age of 50 and the risk rises with advancing age. Shingles occurs because of exposure to chickenpox or reactivation of the herpes zoster virus. The virus remains latent (dormant) in nerve roots for numerous years following chickenpox.

Shingles is an extraordinarily painful condition that involves inflammation of sensory nerves. It causes numbness, itching or pain followed by the appearance of clusters of littles blisters in a strip pattern on one side of the body. The pain can persist for weeks, months or years after the rash heals and is then known as post-herpetic neuralgia.

People with shingles are contagious to persons who have not had chickenpox and can catch chickenpox from close contact with a person who has shingles. Treatment includes antiviral medication and pain medication.

The term shingles has nothing to do with a shingle on a roof or the tiny signboard outside the office of a doctor but is derived from the Latin cingulum meaning girdle, the notion being that shingles typically girdles part of the body.

Tuition fees are your responsibility

Once the application is sent, it takes between 2 and 4 weeks the answer, which is often positive. Indeed, the host university in everything to win: a foreign student again, but also money. And yes, because that’s the big difference with Erasmus. In the latter case, the student pays his tuition in his home university, and share in foreign country, most of the time, a scholarship. The student “visitor”, meanwhile, will pay their registration fees in the host university. In Madrid, for example, the bill is at least 200 euros. Subsequently, each selected course will cost between 16 and 17 euros.
Once the file is accepted, the registration fee paid, the student will be treated like any other student. It will be hard to courses and exams at the same level as everyone else.

Preparing your stay

As part of a departure via an agency, most of the steps are done automatically. Airline tickets, school enrollment, family research, you have nothing to do it yourself. The organization to which you pay the expenses of living abroad does everything. Even the visa applications are sometimes supported through registration.
Caution still a few details that belongs to set:
• do passport applications in due time,
• check vaccination requirements in the host country and update them before departure
• Notify Social Security of departure and focus on the methods of reimbursement depending on site costs incurred,
• prevent his departure insurance and check that any accidents are well covered,
• check with the bank that supplies will be needed on site readily accessible (eg international credit card).

Leave for one academic year

Post-baccalaureate, universities also offer their students take off for a semester or a year. In this case, this exchange between universities, where no private entity is involved.
